It is the furthest south of all the states and in many ways it has been compared to England. The capital city is Hobart, which lies in the south of the state. This is one of Australia's most historical cities as its past dates back to the original convicts who were transported here from England. Many of the city buildings are constructed of stone and still bear the hallmarks of the convict tradesmen who built them. The annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race terminates here after its boxing day start. Modern maxi yachts now complete the course in less than two days which is a far cry from the original seven days of the initial races. Many yachts come from international destinations to take on the challenges of this ocean ordeal. After the race the boats are all rafted together in Constitution Dock on Hobart's waterfront and this is a great time to visit as the party atmosphere is truly infectious.
Tasmania is most famous for its world heritage listed wilderness areas, many of which can only be seen by bushwalking. The South West corner of the state is almost totally inaccessible and some of the world’s most beautiful scenery can be found here. Areas like Lake Pedder and Port Davey in the Southwest national park are special places that only the very lucky get to visit. Further to the north on the west coast the town of Queenstown provides access for the tourist to tour through some of this wilderness region. The Franklin and Gordon river systems enter the ocean near here and there are many cruises that can take you on a special visit. You can do an extended overnight cruise of a day cruise. Tasmania's midlands are also very popular with tourists. The mountainous regions around The Lake St Clare National park and Cradle Mountain are well known. This region is serviced by several beautiful mountain chalets where you can stay and explore this sensational region. To the east the countryside is agricultural and there are many small country farming villages with charming B&B’s where you can stay and explore. The East coast is really pretty.
In the south is Port Arthur where the remains of the original convict settlements are on display and in the north there is magnificent old growth forests to see. Launceston is the states northern city and you can take a ferry across Bass Straight from nearby Devenport, to the mainland to bring your own vehicle and stay in great Tasmania hotels if you wish. Tasmania is a fantastic place for a motorhome or campervan holiday. Distances are relatively short when compared to mainland Australia and there are plenty of facilities like camping areas and caravan parks. It is also a popular place for organized tours and a number of excellent tour companies will cater for this. Tasmania is a holiday destination with a difference and everyone should visit this part of Australia here at least once in their life.
